New research suggests that individuals who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.
Published data in a prominent health publication points out that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals buying such drugs must be aware of the risk of quick weight regain when the medication is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a reversion to starting mass in about one and a half years.
The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.
The team note that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically have a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Doctors suggest the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened regain.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."
Health authorities suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
People who have discontinued the jabs report a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced something flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.
The struggle is worsened if patients have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
Finally, researchers caution that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing behavioural support.
